Man City in direct talks with Calvin Phillips before the Leeds transfer raid and the England star
The city of Manchester is set to increase its interest in Calvin Phillips this month.
SunSport previously reported that the Premier League champions are set to contact Leeds about the transfer of the England midfielder after returning from international service.
“Direct talks” are scheduled to take place between City and Leeds in the near future, he said Fabrizio Romano.
Pep Guardiola has identified the central midfield as a position he would like to strengthen before the start of the new season.
Romano confirmed that a new midfielder will certainly be appointed before the end of the transfer window.
Fernandinho’s departure after nine years at the club means City are looking to replace the veteran Brazilian this summer.
Elland Road ace Phillips, 26, has emerged as a top target.
The player himself allegedly told his childhood club that he would like to leave to join the Premier League champions.
It is believed that a fee of £50m would be enough to secure a deal that exceeds the Three Lions star’s 23-cap ceiling.
Reports in recent days have suggested that City want to wrap up Phillips’ move before heading off to their US tour in July.

But the club is set to face competition for Phillips’ signature from French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
Elsewhere in the City midfield they are planning to extend Rodri’s contract by the end of the year.
The elegant Spaniard has played an integral role in Guardiola’s squad since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2019.
Rodri’s current deal expires in 2024, but the 25-year-old is set to be rewarded for his franchise by offering the new terms.
It is said that Boss Guardiola has already given the green light to start discussions with Rodri later in the year.
