a group of Texas Tech Donors are said to be extending NIL’s annual deals for 100 Red Raiders footballers before the 2022 season, According to a report from Lubbock Avalanche–magazine.
All 85 scholarship players and 15 top entrants will be eligible for a one-year renewable deal of $25,000 from The Matador Club, a non-profit organization made up of private donors. Players who accept the offer are expected to complete community service and other charitable work around Lubbock, Texas, efforts that will continue throughout the next year, according to Avalanche Journal.
Cody Campbell, a founding member of the group’s board of directors and a former Texan offensive tech lead from 2001 to 2004, explained that the purpose of the agreements would simply be to “support the entire program.” He also noted that the Matador Club has hired a lawyer to ensure they are operating in accordance with NCAA rules, and will begin distributing monthly payments starting in the first week of August; Deals will not prevent players from pursuing other zero deals.
“Groups have done things in many different ways,” Campbell said. “You see some of them pay big for singles. You see others doing different things. But what we really want to do is support the whole program. That’s kind of the base salary for guys. They won’t be prevented from doing anything else with nobody else. Indeed, we will encourage and help them to do so.

“But it’s just something that will ensure that the guys feel supported by the Texas Tech community, that they are comfortable and in a position where they can stay in the program and develop themselves, because we really believe in what Coach (Joey) McGuire and his crew are doing in terms of focusing on long-term player development. We think that’s the key to Texas Tech’s success, in particular.”
Regarding Matador’s plans for other Texas Tech athletic programs, Campbell said the group plans to move forward with the men’s basketball and baseball team “in the coming weeks, coming months.” Outside of his work with the group, Campbell donated $25 million in December to renovate the south end of the Red Raiders’ home, Jones AT&T Stadium, which will be named in his honor after the project is completed.
In the year since Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed the state’s NIL law into effect, Texas Tech athletes have revealed deals worth nearly $1.7 million as of June 30, according to the Avalanche Journal. In all, 170 male and 48 female math students “revealed 534 nil deals averaging $3,180 per activity.”
