while appearing on View TK Podcast, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was asked about contract negotiations going on with wide receiver Deebo Samuel. The star reportedly requested a deal in April due to how much he played in the team’s attack.
Shanahan said he’s not worried about the situation or Samuel Samed and expects him to participate in training during bootcamp. His comments can be heard Here at 10:17 Marker.
“I think this will take care of itself,” Shanahan said. “Days of holding on and things are a little different now because the players, no matter what the team decides next, they always have to pay it back. These guys don’t make sense. … So I would be surprised if that happens.”

Samuel is on the verge of an extension and if the team is not reached, he can either trade him in or allow him access to free agency outside next season. The 26-year-old is used unlike any wide in the NFL due to his utility in the running game but is said to not want to be used that way anymore because of the hits he has accumulated. Shanahan was asked if he was considering agreeing to not use Samuel as much in the running game next season.
“It’s absolutely something I would do if I thought that was the best thing for our team, if I thought that was the best thing for Debo, that’s an easy decision,” Shanahan said. “If you think this is the wrong thing for the team, and if you also think that this is the right decision for the player, then that is something you have to talk about with people. There are no secret agendas here.”
Not only did Samuel 77 passes for 1,405 yards last season, but he also rushed for 365 yards on 59 coaches. He finished 2021 with 14 total touchdowns and was selected for the All-Pro first team. Samuel is perhaps the most important player in the 49ers class, and losing him, even by trade, would be a huge blow.
