After a layover with Bills, Browns, Colts, steelers, And the Bengals, these are five ideas from Beers Training camp…
1) High school was a pleasant surprise. The Rookie Jaquan Brisker already looks like a complete safety – large enough to loosen and fast enough to cover the ground deeply – a name that is constantly brought up in discussions with the Bears. His teammate in the second round, Kyler Gordon, who fits Matt Eberflus’ scheme perfectly as a corner, is quickly accommodated, along with Brisker, meshing well with vets Eddie Jackson and Jaylon Johnson. This set might be the best on the reformulated list.
2) Darnell Mooney’s speed, dribbling and adaptability came just as advertised in the early days of camp. He’ll never be the bigger guy, but his evolution has been steady, taking time one on one to build a real relationship with Justin Fields.

3) While we’re in Fields, he’s made really big strides in his foot movement, showing his head in the game in picking up the new language of Luke Getsy’s offense. He impressed the new hires with his leadership – there’s a story from a week the players spent the spring as Fields came to the facility and gathered the managers to throw them in. His deep ball looks good too, and they’ve done a lot of work on his average accuracy. Getsy’s approach with Fields has been to build with him methodically, deliberately taking every step to give him ownership of the crime, to try and get the game to slow down for him after a tumultuous rising year.
4) The offensive line, as expected, needs a lot of leveling. Teven Jenkins can be handled, and starting jobs will be ready to grab the pads this week. Rookies Braxton Jones and Zachary Thomas battle it out for real time play.
5) The biggest question about defense now is at centre-back, where Roquan Smith is “stuck” and there isn’t a lot of depth around him. One of the main battles in the camp will be Matt Adams and Joe Thomas fighting for a place in Sam. I expect the bears will comb the waiver wire to help here later in the summer.
