When he had the opportunity to attend another event with the newly elected president and Michelle Obama, Penn’s acting manager told the first lady how he had unsuccessfully applied to work in the White House.

“I told her I put my change.gov CV on as the email said, and she looked at me like I was the biggest idiot in the whole world and she probably realized how ridiculous it was,” Ben said. “I got so weird about this that she called the president-elect… then she looked at me and said, ‘Tell him what you just told me.’”

“I said, ‘Well, sir, you know, I’ve already applied for a job at the White House in case there’s anything I’ll be qualified to do. And he looked at me and said, “Who did you apply with?” And then I was like Oh God, this again. I said “I applied on change.gov.” And unlike his wife, he just smiled at me and it was the same thought though, the smile was Like, “Oh my god, you idiot” and he said something like, “Why didn’t you reach out to anyone?”

Ben got a call the next day and ended up working in the White House’s Office of Public Engagement for two years before returning to acting.

“The biggest take away from that experience,” he joked, “is that I’m a great idiot.”
