1. I’m perfectly aware that Twitter doesn’t like anything, but sometimes the reaction to a piece of news is So So cruel that it becomes noteworthy.
Sunday , New York PostAndrew Marchand It was reported that NBC is set to announce Jac Collinsworth and Jason Garrett as the broadcast crew for the Notre Dame home games broadcast on the network.
My initial reaction when I saw the news was, “Well, that’s definitely uninspiring, but this is Notre Dame football and they only play one or two games on NBC, so it’s no big deal.”
However, it was a huge problem for a lot of fans out there. And it was just hard to ignore the negative response.
I don’t like to bring up any announcer or radio crew before hearing them, but there are clearly issues with the Collinsworth-Garrett team before the season begins.
Collinsworth has to automatically deal with accusations of nepotism since his father Chris has worked for NBC since 2006. I think it’s unfair to cry before seeing someone’s work. Joe Buck has heard crony bullshit for years and is one of the greatest gaming men of our time. Therefore, Jack Collinsworth can turn out to be a strong caller to the game and must be given a chance to prove it no matter who his father is.
Now, people will say the problem isn’t Collinsworth’s performance. It gave him the chance. But Collinsworth has a radio/media background; He worked for ESPN and called the USFL Games for NBC. But that doesn’t seem to be enough for some people.
Garrett is NBC’s most curious choice because he has credibility issues with fans. In nine full seasons as a coach for the Dallas Cowboys, he had three winning seasons. Garrett has never shown a character that would translate well to a booth.
And unlike Collinsworth, who attended Notre Dame, Garrett has nothing to do with the school. So it’s not like it’s set to appeal to the battling Irish fan base.
This is where I’ve been pulling a few tweets to support what I wrote, but the reaction to Garrett’s hiring has been bad and vicious, and I don’t want to be. Just check out the responses to this tweet.
Collinsworth and Garrett have a lot to get over, and they haven’t even asked for their kidnappers yet.
