Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to visit the UK in early October, their first joint visit since the Queen’s jubilee celebrations in June, which in itself was only their second visit to the UK together since stepping out of the ranks of the working royal family.
In a sign that relations between the Palace and the Sussexes may be stable, a Buckingham Palace source told The Daily Beast that they had advance notice of the announcement made on Monday morning, but declined to say how much. The palace seems relaxed about the visit.
A spokesman for the Sussex family said they would visit Britain to support charities “close to their hearts”. However, it has not been revealed whether they will have a meeting with the Queen, or meet Charles or William, whom they have walked away from. The Daily Beast understands that Charles and William are treating Harry with caution until his memoirs, due out later this year, are published.
Earlier this year, Harry refused to say he “missed” his brother and father in an interview with Hoda Kotb.
British stops will occur en route and back to the Invictus Games event in Düsseldorf, Germany. Harry helped set up a Paralympic-style event for wounded ex-servicemen more than a decade ago, and it has become one of his most enduring legacy.
It has not been determined whether the couple will take their children with them on the visit, but that is considered unlikely.
“Prince Harry, Meghan and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are delighted to visit the many charities close to their hearts in early September,” a statement issued on behalf of the couple said.
The published schedule will see them attend the One Young World 2022 Summit in Manchester on September 5, followed by a spirited visit to Dusseldorf on September 6 for the ‘One Year on the Go’ event for the 2023 Games to be held there. On September 8, while returning home, they will attend the British Will Child Awards.
Harry has been embroiled in a legal battle with the British government, saying that he was unfairly stripped of the automatic police protection he once had, and that he should obtain this protection with his family, when on British soil, having “inherited” a security risk when Birth.
Police said Harry would be adequately protected but that the protection would take place on an ad hoc basis. However, Harry was said to have been particularly alarmed when on a solo visit to London last year to unveil a statue of his mother in Kensington Gardens, and the paparazzi had him aggressively chased as he left a charitable event. It is possible that a side arrangement of these visits has been worked out that satisfies Harry and means he feels he can keep his family safe.
It would be great to watch the British public’s reaction to Harry and Meghan’s arrival on British soil.
While they undoubtedly have a large fan base, the couple still polarizing characters In the UK, where some believe they have abandoned their duty and betrayed the monarchy by conducting a series of accusatory interviews in which they have accused the royal family of being racist and indifferent.
In their interview with Oprah Winfrey, Harry and Meghan said an unnamed member of the royal family had raised concerns about the possible skin color of their unborn children. Harry and Meghan have pledged not to reveal the identity of the person who made the alleged comment, but there has been speculation with several authors and reports identifying the names of various prominent members of the family.
The couple’s recent visit to the UK to celebrate the jubilee saw a largely unseen role. In the only event in which they appeared in public, a church service, they were booed upon their arrival by some in the crowd and cheered by other parts of it. They were not invited to appear on the balcony at Buckingham Palace with other members of the royal family, nor were they apparently invited to a charity concert at Buckingham Palace on the last day of the festivities. The couple took two private jets home in California before the concert began in what many interpreted as a fit of cuteness.
