I arrived at the inn on a weekday morning after navigating the paths that meander through the local market.

I had just arrived in Bangkok on a train from Chiang Mai. On first impression, the hostel cafe and bar, Rise, looked great.

Many hostels I’ve stayed in in the past had cramped or non-air-conditioned lounge spaces. By contrast, this hotel looked like a small hotel: it was air conditioned, spacious and clean. The backpackers were lounging and having breakfast.

My room wasn’t ready when I arrived, check in time was 2pm, so I ordered an iced mocha and settled in to do some work at the cafe.
