Dan Campbell is not your typical NFL coach.
Honshu head black He made it clear from day one when he vowed in his introductory press conference that his team would bite their opponents to the knees. (He was speaking figuratively, not literally. We think so.)
Recently, he told fans in colorful fashion how hungry his team was to win.
We are starving. We are starving! “So the hyenas better get out of the way,” Campbell said at a rally for fans on August 6.
On Monday, Campbell went off script again. This time, he and the entire Lions coaching staff took a step back and let the players manage the entire drill. Campbell was present but did not interrupt the exercise. The rest of the employees were exempted from attending.
Detroit was unsuccessful in practice on Monday, and a portion of the team’s training was relatively short, with no one-on-one sessions. The coaches provided a transcript and outline of the exercises, and the players took it from there, according to Sports IllustratedAll Lions website.
The Lions players seemed to agree with Campbell’s empowering gesture.
“It’s a good way to get players to hold each other accountable,” Josh Reynolds, one of the wide receivers, told All Lions. “Instead of having a coach every day who is there – all the time. To hear it from one of your teammates, one of your teammates – it sounds different.”
Junior safety team Kirby Joseph agreed that the trial would help the Lions in terms of accountability.
“It felt like it was a real experience to show us that it was up to us,” Joseph told All Lions. “The coach (Campbell) said all the teams he was a part of, winning leagues and things like that, were motivated by the players. I felt it was a good opportunity to show us that we can do that.”
