A man is facing charges after a Utah Senate candidate claimed that someone aimed him and his wife with a firearm when they were driving home earlier this year, according to reports.

CNN reported That a man, Jack Aaron Welshell, had been convicted of misdemeanor charges – he pleaded not guilty – in connection with the April 10 confrontation.

The victim, Evan McMullen, made a statement recently in Utah County District Court and alleges Welchil “followed and chased us, pulled his truck to the side and forced my wife and I into the oncoming traffic lane,” according to the report. .

The couple were on their way home from a campaign event in southern Utah when the alleged incident occurred, according to reports.

“Then, he brandished a firearm, and pointed it at us in a threatening manner,” the statement, an allegation that Welchil’s attorney denied, said in the outlet. However, his attorney told CNN that his client had placed the gun on the center console of his car.

In a separate statement to KUTV, McMullen claimed Welshell has a history of “promoting political violence on social media,” although it’s not clear if that played a role in the dispute.

“Regardless, he has put my life and my wife’s life in danger and I am fully cooperating with the law enforcement authorities who have charged him with related crimes,” McMullen told the local news station.

According to CNN, Whelchel is expected to return to Utah, where he no longer resides, to stand trial.
