LA cops shot Jermaine Petty after realizing he didn’t have a gun, Bodycam footage shows

Immediately after Los Angeles police officers shot a 39-year-old black man multiple times in the back, the department claimed its officers believed he was carrying a gun. However, in the body cam footage of the July 18 incident, released on Wednesday, an officer can be heard saying, “It’s not a gun, brother,” as they chase him on foot.

A 911 caller alerted law enforcement to a man walking around the area brandishing a “black semi-automatic pistol,” according to the audio of the call. Responding officers encountered Jermaine Petty, who partially matched the caller’s description of the suspect, several blocks from where the incident was reported.

In the footage, Beatty is seen walking away as officers approach him with their weapons drawn. Then one of the officers said, “What is…brother, did you say this is not a gun?”

“Hey, drop it!” Says another, identifies as Officer Daryl Glover Jr., as they chase my house through a road.

As the sergeant of the Los Angeles Police Department. Brett Hayhoe — a “uniformed supervisor,” LAPD Chief Michael Moore said the next day — stood next to my house in a squad car, heard several shots in the footage, and my house collapsed. As he moves on the ground, officers shout at each other to hide and ask the 39-year-old to “stop reaching for him”.

The shooting of Betty, an Air Force veteran with a history of mental illness, including post-traumatic stress disorder, marked the 2022 LAPD’s 20th anniversary. The footage was first released Thursday by Streetsblog Los Angeles and Twitter user William Judd.

Hours after the shooting, a department spokesperson told reporters that the victim was armed with a weapon. However, two days later, Moore retracted the claim, telling the Board of Police Commissioners that the object was not a weapon but rather a component of the vehicle.

chest pictures By the department last month it showed the body in question — a 6-inch black metal body, identified by Moore as the latch trigger. Police continued to insist that the officers involved mistook the trigger for a handgun, with a detective calling it a “malfunctioning firearm” at a half-hour town hall on July 28, according to Streetsblog Los Angeles.

After the shooting, Pettit was taken to the hospital, where he remained in critical condition for several days, according to A GoFundMe raised by his daughter. On July 29, Los Angeles police said Petty was recovering from his injuries but was being held in hospital under two pending arrest warrants instead of a $100,000 bond.

It was not immediately clear on Thursday whether Betty remained in the hospital, and a request for updates on his condition was not immediately returned by The Daily Beast.

Two days after the shooting, law enforcement recommended that the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office file two counts of brandishing a replica of a firearm against Petty.

A spokesman for the City of Los Angeles Attorney General Mike Foer said Thursday that the case is still under review by his office. The police department’s investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
