Start ‘Em, Sit’ Em is the best look at the best and worst matches based on the PPR scoring system in fantasy football. This column will not cover elite NFL players like Josh Allen, Jonathan Taylor or Cooper Cope. Instead, I’ll look at the players you have questions about who can exceed or fail to meet expectations at each position. For all your final fantasy squad decisions, be sure to check out my weekly player ratings which will be updated daily throughout the NFL season.
Beginning of the first week: Defenses
Fabs Top 101. 49ers defense in Bears2. Broncos defense in Seahawks (MNF) 3. The Ravens’ defense in Jets4. The Texas Colts’ Defense 5. The Saints’ Defense in the Hawks 6. The Bengals’ Defense against the Steelers 7. The Titans’ Defense against the Giants 8. The Eagles’ Defense in the Lions9. Defense heads in Cardinals10. Billing Defense in Ramez (TNF)
Beginning of the week
Broncos defense at Seahawks (Monday 8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN): Russell Wilson’s revenge game will not only be good in the Broncos’ attack, but the defense should also be good in the stats rolls. Geno Smith doesn’t raise much fear about the NFL, and the Broncos have to reach out to him often and force multiple turnovers as well.
Beginning of the first week, sit down: QUARTERBACKS | Running from behind | wide receivers | narrow ends | kickers / defense
start ‘Em
raThe Jets’ vens defense (1 p.m. ET, CBS): I guess you could call this game Joe Flacco’s revenge (?), but he’s little more than a backup at this point in his career. The planes have made some improvements to attack, but could Bryce Hall or Garrett Wilson make an immediate impact? I tend to think no. Start with Baltimore.

Week 1 Sitting: Defenses
sit week
Cowboys defense against pirates (8:20 p.m. ET, NBC): The Cowboys had one of the elite defenses in fantasy football last season, but their opening week game against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers doesn’t bode well. I wouldn’t leave this unit completely, but managers with a Dallas defense should explore alternatives.
sat down
Packers defense in the Vikings (4:25 p.m. ET, Fox): The Green Bay defense should be a good option for fantasy fans when the showdown is right, but that’s not the case this week. Their defense has allowed Minnesotas 28 or more points in two of their last three encounters, including two games with 34 points. Expect a high score match.

Beginning of the first week: kickers
Fabs Top 101. Justin Tucker in Jets2. Tyler Bass in the Rams (TNF) 3. Harrison Potker in Cardinals4. Evan McPherson vs. the Steelers 5. Rodrigo Blankenship at Texas 6. Daniel Carlson at Chargers7. Ryan Sokop in Cowboys8. Jake Elliott at Lions9. Dustin Hopkins vs. Raiders 10. Matt Jay vs. Bills (TNF)
Complete the first week’s rankings: QB | RB | WR | TE | Flex | k | the summer timing
Beginning of the week
Rodrigo Blankenship in Texas (1 p.m. ET, CBS): Blankenship missed most of last season due to injuries, but he’s back at 100% and should be productive against the Texans. Their defense provided the sixth most points (26.6 PPG) last season, so look to Matt Ryan and his crew to give Blankenship plenty of chances.
More beginnings
- Dustin Hopkins vs. Raiders (4:25 p.m. ET, CBS)
- Jake Elliott at Lions (1 p.m. ET, Fox)
- Ryan Sokop on the Cowboys (8:20 p.m. ET, NBC)
Week One Sitting: Kickers
sit week
Greg Zorlin vs. Ravens (1 p.m. ET, CBS): Greg the Leg has lost much of his fantasy luster after his off-season move to the Jets, whose stunt may be less than impressive with Joe Flacco under center. Kickers of the Men in Green were among the worst in fantasy production last season, so keep Zuerlein out.
sitting more
- Jason Sanders vs. the Patriots (1 p.m. ET, CBS)
- Greg Joseph vs. Packers (4:25 p.m. ET, Fox)
- Chris Boswell in the Bengals (1 p.m. ET, CBS)
