LaQuan Smith displays his costumes on an aircraft carrier

Laguan Smith used the stunning setting of a historic aircraft carrier for his fashion show to explore the female form.

On a Monday evening aboard the USS Intrepid, a popular tourist attraction moored on the Hudson River, Smith launched his spring-ready-to-wear collection. Grinding between wartime effects like the Avenger bomber, fashion insiders, music industry celebrities and social media influencers sip cocktails and snap photos while they wait for the show to start. New York Fashion Week’s frequent muse Julia Fox met friends like Lourdes “Lola” Leon – Madonna’s daughter – while posing for photos in a fur-trimmed miniskirt from Smith’s fall show last year.

“He’s an IT worker,” Fox said in an interview. “You can’t describe it, but Laguan has it, and he understands women and what makes women feel good.”

Swedish model Elsa Hosk opened the show in a fresh neon pink jumpsuit and track skirt. With long ponytails swinging behind them to the rhythm, models followed one by one in harmonious, barely-flare outfits with sheer jewelry and rolled heels.

After the show, Smith said his influence on the group came from his travels including his recent trip to Morocco, which he said made him feel overwhelmed with ideas. He then returned to New York and applied his hometown sensibility to his drawings.

His ideas manifested in the romantic elegance of silk chiffon scarves draped around a model’s necks into pants for a modern day out.

“This collection was all about sensuality, feminine formality, and really has a sense of freedom and fluidity,” Smith said. “This season has been a huge creative challenge for me because I was thinking kind of lighter and softer.”

As with many other designers featured this season, semi-nakedness was featured. When models weren’t showing off on the runway, Smith would have made structured bodies to adorn their chests.

Norwegian model Frida Asen wore a bodice made of silver wings and a matching silver sash over a sheer black body-hugging skirt.

Since Smith debuted in 2013, he has taken his brand to new heights. Recently, Beyoncé wore one of Smith’s comfortable dresses for her campaign with jewelry brand Tiffany.

“I’m living my dream, and it’s not done the way I thought it would, but sometimes I have to push myself and realize, ‘Oh my God, Beyoncé wore LaQuan Smith on a Tiffany and Co billboard,'” he said.
