Prince Harry and Prince William walk side by side behind the Queen’s coffin on Wednesday

Prince Harry and Prince William are expected to make another carefully managed display of unity on Wednesday, when they walk behind the Queen’s body as she travels from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall this afternoon. The majestic procession will evoke inevitable memories of the boys who walked behind Diana’s coffin together 25 years ago.

Their wives are expected to travel together in a tracking car.

The procession will leave Buckingham Palace, where the Queen’s body lay on Tuesday night, at 2:22 p.m. Wednesday, with the lead oak sarcophagus carried in a cannon cart through London’s grand ceremonial streets.

Charles, William, Harry, Andrew, Edward and Anne will follow the casket on foot as it makes its 38-minute journey in front of thousands of mourners lining the streets.

A palace source said members of the royal family would deal “in no particular order”, but it was understood Harry and William would walk hand in hand.

Harry, Meghan, Kate and William are understood to have met face to face on Tuesday night as the family gathered to return the Queen’s remains to Buckingham Palace.

Harry was told he might not be wearing a military uniform, and on Tuesday night issued an angry statement attacking the media for commenting on this fact, he also appeared to express his dissatisfaction with the decision.

In a message posted online by reporter Omid Scobie, Harry’s office said: “Prince Harry will wear a morning suit throughout events to honor his grandmother. His contract of military service is not specified in the uniform he is wearing and we respectfully request that the focus remain on the life and legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.”

The Queen will lie in Westminster Hall for four full days. An estimated 400,000 people are expected to queue up to five miles long and wait up to 35 hours to pay their respects.

For William and Harry, Wednesday’s parade may bring back painful memories of the procession they joined, at ages 15 and 12, to walk behind the coffin of their mother, Princess Diana, in 1997.

Harry has condemned the decision to make him take part in that rally in recent years.
