Celtics Pin Ime Udoka
Less than a month before the start of the regular season, he will meet without his coach.
The team announced last night that Ime Udoka has been suspended for the entire season due to “violations of team policies”. According to multiple reports, Odoka had an “inappropriate” relationship with a Celtics employee. Here’s everything we know so far about the situation.
Relationship
When the story first broke out, they both ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski And the the athleteShams Asherani You mentioned that the relationship was consensual. But more recent reports from Charania indicate that the situation is not entirely clear. This is what Charania wrote In an article published late last night:
Sources said some Celtics members first learned of the relationship in July. At the time, he was leading the team’s leadership to believe by both parties that the relationship was consensual. But sources said the woman recently accused Odoka of making unsolicited comments towards her – which led to the team launching a slew of internal interviews.
Odoka’s future
SI’s Chris Mannix reported earlier yesterday that Udoka was considering resigning, but TNT’s Chris Haynes later stated that Udoka would not be stepping down, after all. However, Mannix reports that the Celtics team does not guarantee that Udoka will get a job after the suspension ends.
Who will run the Celtics?
The team announced that Boston assistant Joe Mazzola has been appointed as interim head coach. Mazzola, 34, was an assistant with the Celtics’ G-League’s Maine Red Claws during the 2016-17 season, then spent two years as a head coach at Division-II Fairmont State in West Virginia before joining the Celtics. Assistant in ’19. Although inexperienced, Mazzulla Loved by Celtics players.
But is a 34-year-old with just two years of D-II-level coaching experience and three seasons as an NBA assistant really ready to take on an NBA team? Mannix tweeted that It won’t be a surprise If the Celtics reached out to an experienced coach like Frank Vogel.

The Mariners haven’t participated in the playoffs in 20 years, but they are ready to do so this year thanks to 21-year-old apparent Julio Rodriguez, Greg Bishop wrote in Today’s Daily Cover:
This is Julio Rodriguez, human helium; Affectionate electrician. It could potentially be a franchise savior. He’s so young that his teammates referred to him as Simba in spring training. He’s so talented that the All-Stars radiate poetry around his instruments — all five, all charged — as well as a roof over the Space Needle.
His life also extends to the Mariners’ drought after the season, revealing a potentially transformative juxtaposition. His 21 years is the childhood of a professional baseball star. 20 years of Seattle’s post-season absence is nearly half of its 46 seasons. By this, the drought and the star are the same age.

SIQ yesterday: Brown beat the Steelers last night to improve to 3-3 in that rivalry of the decade. What was the last decade that Cleveland scored the best record in the series?
Answer: the eighties. After Pittsburgh’s “Steel Curtain” won 15 out of 20 meets in the 1970s, the Browns enjoyed their latest string of continuing successes in the 1980s. The Cleveland played the playoffs seven times in the decade and won 12 of 20 meetings with the Steelers. Their 51-0 win over Pittsburgh in the first week of the 1989 season remains the most uneven result in the rivalry’s history and the Steelers’ biggest defeat ever.
It was all downhill from there for the Browns, who went 5-10 against the Steelers in the ’90s, 3-18 in the 2000s and 3-16-1 in the ’20s. The Steelers have been pretty consistent under Ben Roethlisberger for most of the past two decades, but with things more uncertain in Pittsburgh now, the door may be open for Brown to turn things around.

Before getting into Tom Verducci’s story about Mariano Rivera, let me take a moment to marvel at the amazing career of Walter Iooss Jr. , the photographer who shot Rivera’s picture on the cover. The photo on the cover of the September 22, 2008 issue of SI that I showed yesterday from The Vault was also photographed by Iooss. in 1962. He was 18 (if you want to read more about Iooss, SI published a great article about it in 2011.)
Rivera was Eos Jr of Relief Jugs. He appeared on the cover of SI four times during his 19-year career, including on the eve of the 2009 postseason season with Another cover story from Verducci.
His 2013 cover came as his legendary career drew to a close, and Verducci’s story perfectly illustrates why Rivera is an icon, not only with stats and skills but also with his leadership and generosity.
Verducci has let Rivera’s teammates do the talking, quoting widely from fellow stars like Jorge Posada, Derek Jeter and Roy Halladay, as well as more anonymous people like the Bullpen’s Yankees coach, media relations manager and former Royal Club host who comforted Rivera after a family tragedy.
The only disappointing thing about Rivera’s career is that, as a man best known for his October big moments, the Yankees were unable to make the playoffs in his final season.
