Hussain often photographed the royal family on overseas tours and official engagements in the UK. He was attending the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June – commemorating the 70th anniversary of the throne – which ended up being the last time he photographed the Queen.

Speaking to Insider after the queen’s death in September, Hussain said one of the last photos he took of the queen was at Trooping the Color, the king’s birthday parade in London, which also commemorates the platinum jubilee.

“The Queen’s appearance was limited, but her appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace produced some classic royal portraits,” Hussain said, adding that his last favorite portrait was of the Queen and her grandson Prince Louis.

Louis, 4, is the youngest son of Prince William and Kate Middleton. He stood beside the Queen as the family watched Jubilee fly over Buckingham Palace on June 2, and his reactions – including waving and covering his ears – entertained royal audiences around the world.

“This was my standout photo from the Queen’s jubilee celebrations this summer. Prince Louis’ reaction to the fly was so hilarious and the Queen is smiling, taking everything in her stride to snap the photo,” Hussain said. “Lovely spontaneous royal photo to take.”

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson announced at the time that the Queen had passed away peacefully at Balmoral Castle on September 8. She was 96 years old.

“Little Louis is so cute,” Kate told the crowd. “He was like, ‘Mom, don’t worry. She is now with Grandpa.”
