Former employees described working for King Charles at Clarence House as round-the-clock work
Author and journalist Valentine Lu gave a glimpse into the king’s former royal family, or royal office, in Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown. Until the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the 73-year-old worked out of Clarence House.
in Times of London An excerpt from the book, Law described the former Prince of Wales as a “demanding president”.
“Working for him is not from nine to five,” they said before sharing insights from former palace employees about what their experiences were like working for the current king.
“He’s never satisfied with himself or what he’s accomplished. The people around him have had to work hard to keep up. Lu quotes a former employee as saying.
Another told Low, who works for him, “He was demanding that he always work. Seven days a week. He never stopped.”
“At any moment he might want to contact you about something,” the author added. “I work on his boxes, his ideas, his papers. The pace is very intense.”
A former employee spoke of King Charles’ ‘appropriate temperament’, telling the author that he ‘seldom directs the matter to an individual’.
A former employee also recalled seeing the “right mood” of King Charles. They told Low, who first reported allegations of bullying against Meghan Markle in 2021, that employees were not usually the target.
It was rarely directed at the individual. It would be something to do with it, and he would lose his temper. They said: He was throwing something. “He would go from zero to 60 in a flash, then back down again. Things would frustrate him, especially the media.”
There have been previous allegations about Prince William’s temper
Various claims have also been made that the Prince of Wales now has a temper. In his 2020 book, Brothers battle, Robert Lacey claimed that Camilla Parker Bowles had first-hand witness to William’s temper. He wrote “Scream and Delirium” for the 40-year-old as a young man – a surprise to the now-queen consort.
Meanwhile, another royal author claimed that William’s wife, Kate Middleton, helped him control his temper. A friend of the Prince and Princess of Wales has told royal biographer Ingrid Seward that Kate can talk to William when he “gets out of his hand”.
However, any eruptions from William may be few and far between. According to Seward, fatherhood “softened” William.
