With the premiere of the movie October 1, 48 Saturday Night Live On the doorstep, judgments will soon be made about the position he occupies. Given All the recently departed castThere seems to be a little anxiety in the air. While some stars only lasted one season on the show, many who left recently have been there for a long time.
No matter how the upcoming season unfolds, there are still old shows to come back and revisit. Of course, SNL has ebbed and flowed in terms of quality. But the “transition” years, in which there was a significant change in the cast, often praised the best results. This is certainly true for season 44 back in 2018/2019.
in interview with eagleSNL stars and writers focused on why season 44 was the best.
Colin Jost and Michael Che switch offensive jokes
The 44th season of SNL happened, and former President Donald Trump had just finished his first year in office. The 2020 election cycle was a long way off, and the long-running NBC graphic show thought the world just needed to laugh.
While there was certainly a lot of political satire, Season 44 allowed itself to play out with some really hilarious graphics. On top of that, they built the pre-existing relationships that are vital to the show’s success. This included the dynamic between “Weekend Update” announcers Colin Jost and Michael Che.
Perhaps the best sketch of SNL’s Weekend Update that included the two happened on December 15, 2018, and then again on May 18, 2019. That’s when Colin and Michael decided to write each other an incredibly offensive joke they had to say.
“It was Colin’s idea,” Michael Che, who is also lead writer, told Vulture. “I don’t really know how he came up with it. We have a lot of jokes we don’t use that can be pretty harsh, so I just find things I’ve always wanted to use. That’s the spirit of it, but I’m going to edit and rewrite it so it looks funny coming out of Colin’s mouth” .
“It’s the scariest and most exciting moment of my life to look up and see a cue card and not know what it’s on and know it was written by Michael Che,” Colin added.
The fact that there was anxiety behind the scenes about what might make the two say each other added much-needed color to the show. It was called “PC too”. Most importantly, it showed the honest and authentic camaraderie between two of the show’s most important players.
It was funny.
Adam Sandler hosts SNL and pays homage to Chris Farley
Everything about Adam Sandler’s big comeback hosting Saturday Night Live was considered a hit. Not only did he repeat some of his most believable characters, he brought in new ideas that were both refreshing and funny. It’s also been a big deal for the cast and crew since Adam hasn’t returned to SNL since he was fired in 1995.
Due to his stature, all the writers were giving their best material… and it worked like a charm.
But nothing quite beats home like paying homage to good friend Chris Farley.
“When he sang [the Chris Farley song]”Obviously it was emotional,” supervising writer Fran Gillespie told Vulture. Lots of people came down to the ground to watch him play. It’s hard not to be affected. It was the same building we were standing in and they became comedic legends.”
While there was no home drought on SNL, it was the audience at home who really connected with it.
“You think about your friendships and connections,” Fran continued. “You can’t help but think like, ‘Oh, Sandler sings this to Farley and they’re in the same place we’re working on right now.'” It was great. He hit the right tune. It’s really hard to do that on a show like SNL. Illustration, ad A commercial, then a Chris Farley song.”
John Mulaney’s Fabulous Drawing “Bathroom Bodega”
On March 2, 2019, one of SNL’s top hosts returned. While most of John Mulaney’s episodes have been great, his “Bodega Bathroom” sketch was his best.
The set was something of a Broadway show. And that’s a huge problem since SNL doesn’t always brag about their sets the way they can. And most importantly, it required a lot of intricate choreography that showed not only the diverse talents of the actors, but also the comedy.
