No influencer feels more comfortable in confidence these days than Alex Cooper, host of the popular Spotify Sex and Relationships podcast Call Her Daddy. In the last episode, model and Rhode Skin founder Hailey Bieber, who is She was previously reluctant to speak to the mediasat down with Cooper to address the hate she received online about her husband, Justin Bieber, and famous ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez.
Most of the hour-long session focused on Hailey’s marriage to Justin, specifically the criticism they received about their engagement and rumors that she “stealed” the “peach” singer from Gomez while they were still dating, which Hailey has vehemently denied.
“When he and I started getting attached or anything like that, he was never in a relationship,” said the 25-year-old. “Ever. At any point. It’s not in my character to mess with someone’s relationship. I would never do that.”
Justin and former Disney Channel star Gomez—whose name was somehow not revealed throughout the entire podcast episode—had a famously tumultuous relationship that began in 2010 and ended in March 2018, the same year he announced his engagement to Hailey. This timing, of course, left many onlookers raising their eyebrows.
“I understand, again, what it looks like from the outside,” Healy told Cooper. “And there’s a lot of realization there. But this was a situation where I know for a fact that it was the right thing for them to close that door. They weren’t in a relationship at the time. But of course there’s a very long history there. And it’s not my relationship. He has nothing to do with me.” So I respect that a lot. But I know he closed a chapter. And I think it was the best thing that could have happened to him to move forward and get engaged and marry and move on with his life that way.”
Upon her engagement, the model received backlash from her husband and Gomez’s ardent fan base, referred to respectively as Beliebers and Selenators. As Cooper notes in the interview, fans had a hard time letting go of the former couple, affectionately called Jelena, and the idea that they were each other’s first and only love. According to Hayley, the scrutiny of bad social media comments was demonstrated, including an incident two years ago when she was attacked by Selenators leave hateful messages on Instagram Live.
Cooper also teased Hailey and Justin’s red carpet looks at the 2021 Met Gala, where The crowd repeatedly shouted “Selina” at them. On one occasion on the carpet, Hailey fiddled with something in her eye, which fans interpreted as crying out for negative cheer – one of several plot videos speculating about the couple’s body language. However, Hailey set the record straight by telling Cooper that she simply had something in her eyes.
During the interview, Cooper also asked Hailey if Justin or anyone else had asked Gomez to help put an end to the harassment, which Hailey said no, insisting that she “don’t expect someone to do this for the sake of [her]. Gomez did Addressing the situation indirectly After releasing her 2019 single “Lose You To Love Me” – a song apparently about her split from Justin – when she urged her fans on Instagram Live not to “act rudely to anyone else” on her behalf.
As for whether or not Hailey is on good terms with Gomez, the model said she’s talked since her wedding and that there’s no bad blood between them.
“All due respect,” Healy said. “It’s all love. That’s why if everyone on our side knows what happened and we’re okay and can walk away from it with clarity and respect, that’s okay.”
Whether Hailey finally dispels fan theories about her marriage to keep the Selinators and Bellebers off her back seems doubtful. However, the model told Cooper that the harassment has subsided over the years and that the internet criticism has not put her “very blessed” life in danger.
“They didn’t screw anything up for me,” she declared with confidence. “They don’t ruin my life. They don’t ruin my happiness. That’s actually winning everything. You don’t actually take anything from me.”
