Reggie Bush spent 11 seasons with five different teams in his NFL career. However, the first five years of his professional football career began as an exciting asset for the Saints franchise in 2006, an energetic and passionate team after a year of devastation and catastrophic damage from Hurricane Katrina.
However, before the Saints drafted Bush second in the 2006 NFL Draft after an exciting college football career at USC, he spent the months leading up to the draft thinking he would be named the first pick for the Texans. But on April 28, 2006, the night before enlisting, the Texans changed their plans, then Saints coach Sean Payton wanted Bush in New Orleans.
Bush recently said, “My agent was talking to Houston General Manager Charlie Casserly at the time…the whole process.” I’m athletic audio notation. “You know when you go to [NFL] Collect… I didn’t even meet the other 31 teams because they were like he wouldn’t be here. I just spoke to Houston. This is it. …I’m thinking…I’m going to Houston, looking for real estate there already.”
When Houston instead chose Mario Williams with the first pick that year, Texas gave Bush no advance warning. “They didn’t call us, nothing,” he said added.
With Texas off the board, New Orleans was next and the Jets third. At the time, just eight months after Katrina, the Saints were without a home stadium as the Superdome was restored after the hurricane. As a result, Bush’s agent felt that New Orleans was not the best option for him. “My clients were like, ‘We want to go to New York.’ The third choice, big city, marketing, a lot more money,” Bush added.
Bush was persuaded of the idea, and his agent asked Payton not to withdraw for the lead. Payton wasn’t interested and it was clear he had other plans.
“Shawn” [Payton] He was literally like, ‘F-You. I’m modeling Reggie Bush.’ Bush said.
Bush was a dynamic piece on the ground as a receiver in Saints’ Attack and in the Special Squad Unit. He went on to win the Super Bowl (XLIV) four seasons later in 2010 behind a strong offensive play led by Drew Brees and a defense that was stubborn in forcing turnovers that season.
