‘Jungle’ is the story of ‘Blade Runner’ – Esque Drill-Rap Hood Hood – minus the creativity

Like any piece of art inspired by Blade RunnerAnd the Woods It is a show that really wants to impress you.

The British pits series, now airing on Prime Video, creates groundbreaking visual language and instantly poetic sensation. In the cold opening of the pilot, we cut between the shots of the surf crashing on the shore, a black boy staring at a burning house, a dictionary text and an ominous flip clock while the main character, Gogo (Ezra Elliott), has a prophetic conversation over a phone.

“I gotta get out of here, man,” he said to an unnamed man, referring to his crime-ridden life. “I have to breathe. I feel like if I stayed here, I would die.”

After he ends the call, the narrator explains to us that the violent fantasy scenarios we are about to witness are, in fact, real experiences of real people trying to survive in poor inner cities. “What if I told you that this is our world?” Asked. “Things we’ve lived? Things we’ve seen? Will it ever make a difference in the way you guys see things, and give you a better understanding of us? Probably not, right?”

The entire monologue is a cluttered and fast-paced introduction, apparently aimed at middle-class viewers and meant to add some mystery to an environment all too familiar in film and television. However, we’re learning pretty quickly that there’s nothing necessarily unnatural, unique, or interesting about the designers of the world of dog-eating Junior O’Kole and Chas Abete (better known as Nothing’s Missing), aside from their semi-futuristic surroundings and the characters’ use of rap to sometimes communicate.

However, the musical element does not rise WoodsVery familiar, written narrative. The series focuses on the aforementioned Gogo, whose main struggle, like many of the main characters in Hood Tale, is whether or not to give up his criminal lifestyle before he and/or his loved ones are killed. He does not derive much joy from theft, but rather uses it as a means of survival. We later see that he is stuck in an addiction cycle. In addition, his pregnant girlfriend Jessica (Nadia Spring) is saddened by the danger he is putting himself in. In a plea to get him to retire – it was clearly written by a man – he was repeatedly reminded in tears that he was “a king.”

Gogo is also an amateur, especially in comparison to his ruthless veteran partner Slim (RA-rapper). This becomes apparent when he attempts to assault a robbery victim, resulting in a fatal mistake. Somehow, despite his guilty conscience and the victim’s family members on his tail, Gogo tries to sell the murdered man’s expensive watch to a notorious dealer named Mia Mor$, played by rapper IAMDDB. This creates a conflict with Slim, who originally took over the watch, and a series of other problems for the people in Gogo’s orbit. And his dream of a peaceful life is moving farther and farther.

Even the most modern and sophisticated crime stories share recognizable rhythms and stories. But there is nothing about her WoodsIts rhythm or the life-threatening situations its characters face that really makes your heart race. On a show like HBO BarryFor example, there is a distinction and depth to the way violence is presented. The murders aren’t necessarily glamorous, but they are still shocking and compelling when they happen. On the contrary, in Woods Obviously, the creators wanted to make the show’s sequence of events look “cool” first and foremost. But the result is unoriginal and bland, as if you were watching a glossy music video or a video game.

That’s honestly how you would describe the series in general. It elevates the aesthetics of powerful lighting and camera technologies from stomachand the Harmony Korine films, and according to its creators, loper. However, these stylistic choices are not enough to save some uninspiring writing. Even the parts where the characters are split into hair add a bit of flavor. And none of the actors are skilled enough to lead a high-stakes drama. What seemed like an innovative series is in desperate need of more work.
