It is never too early to look to the future. With this in mind, we are at Sports Illustrated Set our eyes on who will be next and who you should consider for the 2023 NFL Draft with five players each week who have excelled in college football.
Dante Cephas, WR, Kent State
His 246 yards broke a school record he’s held since 1997, with 230 of those yards in the second half. Yardage and 13 catches are all-time highs for a single game at FBS this season. But not only against Al-Mutawa and Al-Qadi teams, Cephas has distinguished itself this season. His six receptions for 106 yards against Washington on September 3 show he’s got what it takes against high-ranking subs as well.
Zee Flowers, WR, Boston College
The Eagles have struggled to find humiliation this season, but as the Flowers go, this one goes to the BC unit. Controls the target team share. The No Eagles pass catcher has over 24 goals this season along with the Flores 47. He finished Louisville’s win with five catches for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Former NFL quarterback Mike Glennon has compared Flowers to the future of Branden Cox in Texas.
Clark Phillips III, DB, Utah
He was so good on Saturday that you’d be forgiven if you thought he was a wide receiver while directing highballs like this:
Phillips was three Objections, including a choice of six. In a scant defense of Utah, you can bet that Phillips has plenty of physical strength and prowess in covering a man.
AT Perry, WR, Wake Forest
If your team needs a long-armed receiver, perhaps they should look no further than Perry, whose 6’5-inch frame and hefty hunting radius often give him an advantage. He has plenty on the distinction reel that has exposed him to deep catching from QB Sam Hartman during his career, and a big day against FSU last Saturday showed he can cut yards after catching smaller pieces as well. He’ll need to add some weight (he weighs 205 pounds), and there will be questions about his age (he’ll turn 24 as a rookie if he gets into the 2023 NFL Draft), but his Instagram handle isn’t lying: “Always open 9.”
Isaiah McGuire and Trajan Jeffcott, Missouri
The Missouri defense has been hit hard in the past two seasons, but Jeffcott and McGuire have made a big showing in the Tigers’ displeasure with Georgia. They took her into the Dogs’ under-appreciated offensive line, causing QB Stetson Bennett to annoy. Jeffcoat finished the game with one sack, one pace and 1.5 tackles for a loss while McGuire was on one sack and 0.5 TFL.
