Kyrgios cites mental health as reasons for dismissing assault charge, in report

Tennis star Nick Kyrgios was due to appear in an Australian court on Tuesday on a common assault charge after his ex-girlfriend said Kyrgios assaulted her in December 2021.

With the 27-year-old currently competing in Tokyo for the Japan Open, his lawyer Michael Kukulis Smith appeared in court in Canberra on Tuesday to request another postponement. The court granted the adjournment request after Kukulis Smith explained how well the Australian tennis star’s mental health issues are well known. Kyrgios court date moved to February 3, 2023.
Back in February of this year, Kyrgios wrote a lengthy Instagram post opening up about his struggles with his mental health, specifically in 2019. He said he committed suicide, tried to harm himself and abused alcohol and drugs during the ’19 season.
Kyrgios has not spoken publicly about the assault charges, even when asked about the case shortly after the charges were made public in July.
