The first trailer for the much-awaited game Super Mario movie It arrived, and–wait, I need to catch my breath, because I’ve been waiting actual years for this.
Seriously: It’s been five years since reports first surfaced that Nintendo was preparing to bring Mario to the big screen for his animated debut. (Whenever we said about the chaos of live action in 1993 Super Mario Bros.starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, and Dennis Hopper, the better.)
Fan excitement escalated in the ensuing years, with the company confirming in 2018 that the film was in production with despicable me Lighting and entertainment makers. And it got really hot last summer, when Mario’s own father, Shigeru Miyamoto, unveiled the film’s English-language soundtrack during a live broadcast. Big names include Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Keegan Michael-Key as Todd. But it was Chris Pratt as Mario that caused the most consternation, because it’s Chris Pratt. If you’re not sick of this guy already, you’re lying to yourself – and God knows he doesn’t need another voice acting after the championship lego movie and next Garfield.
The teaser gives us our first look at the Illumination version of the Mushroom Kingdom – as well as what Pratt’s opinion of Mario looks like. But first, we’re introduced to Black’s Bowser, who is wiping out an entire kingdom of penguin warriors with a single fiery blast. He’s looking for stars, and then what? And no one can stand in his way.
Cue: Mario, whom we see falling from the sky into a vast mushroom forest. “What is this place?” He asks, looking around in utter disbelief. It’s…sounds like Chris Pratt, okay. Which means he’s definitely not Italian, and he’s an essential part of Mario’s character. Instead, our favorite mustache plumber from Japan via Italy looks like a regular guy from California. Mario is Mario. This guy is just someone.
From there, we see Toad (Michael-Key) exit the field and take Mario on his way toward the kingdom, where adventure awaits. We also see, very quickly, a glimpse of Luigi (Day), who is on the run from a group of deadly bad guys in the Dry Bones. scary!
I can’t say for sure what the plot is, but I will guess that Mario and Bowser will fight in the end. Which is pretty cool to me – I don’t need a lot of other stuff in Mario, really.
It’s hard for me not to have all the feeling in the world right now, considering that Super Mario is one of the most beloved franchises in the world. It is definitely one of my favorite things. This teaser does a good job of giving texture and color to the wonderful world of all things Mario, and I’m gladly optimistic that the lighting can make things right. But I’ll never be happy with Crisp Rat expressing Mario in his usual cute style.
