The ponies that run back Nyheim Hines will not return to Thursday night football After suffering a concussion in the first quarter against the Broncos, according to multiple reports.
Hines was terribly injured after being hit in the back of the head in the game’s opening push as he looked to gain extra yards on a short pass from Matt Ryan. The veteran RB right-back dropped at the 14:07 mark of the quarter, looking wobbly after trying to get back on his feet.
Several of his teammates and coaching staff members came to his aid on the field before he was aided on the sidelines of Indianapolis. He eventually managed to walk into the locker room under his power.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport mentioned Shortly thereafter Hines will be evaluated for a concussion after showing “gross motor instability in the field.”
Hines’ injury comes at a time when the focus on head injuries has seen a marked increase in interest over the past two weeks following Tua Tagovailoa’s dreaded head injury in Week 4.
The NFL Players Association recently launched an investigation to see if there was any “possible breach of protocol” involved in the handling of Tagoviloa’s health dating back to his exit due to an anti-billing injury in Week 3.
Tagoviloa’s stance also led the NFL and the NFL to release a joint statement last weekend announcing upcoming changes to the NFL’s concussion protocol rules. Both parties emphasized the focus on assessing “gross driver instability” as part of the reviews.
“The NFL and the NFL have agreed that modifications to the concussion protocol should be made to enhance player safety,” Read the statement. “The NFLPA Health and Safety Committee and the NFL Head, Neck and Spine Committee have already begun talks about the use of the term ‘gross motor instability’ and we expect changes to the protocol in the coming days based on what has been learned so far in the review process.”
