1. So far, I watched the silly by-pass call on Chiefs boss Chris Jones late in the second quarter of Kansas City’s 30-29 win over Las Vegas on Monday night.
There is a lot more here, so let me go to the points.
• The people who associate what happened to Tua Tagovailoa with the rulers being more sensitive about making rough calls by passersby are ignorant. One has nothing to do with the other. Tua could not stand alone. Then play again. a period. end of story. What happened in Kansas City on Monday was simply referee Carl Chivers as bad at his job.
Chivers proved to be a poor referee not only because of his awful call, but also because he defended the awful post-match call.
• One of the benefits of this terrible call is that the audience of the presidents became a huge story, because they worried the governors after that call. Just listen to the fear in the Cheffers’ voice after he raised a flag against Kansas City later in the game.
• Another advantage is seeing a Cheves fan lose him on national television.
• In the last episode of SI Media PodcastAnd the I’ve discussed Andrew Marchand about the usefulness of “grammar experts” in a TV booth. Personally, I think using grammar experts is the most overrated thing about sports TV. That was demonstrated again last night when ESPN’s rules expert, John Barry, declined to say outright that the referees blew up the harsh call. They circled and gave us, “I can see why Kansas City fans aren’t thrilled.”
really? Do you think? Barry must have been so upset that he even had to give this minimal criticism. Later it came on the air to fawn all the judges, because they correctly called the Raiders running back Josh Jacobs in a two-point diversion.
The only time a grammar expert should come to a broadcast is when he’s explaining a rule that viewers may not be familiar with. Having a grammar expert to tell us what we see with our own eyes is not necessary.
