1. One of the big reasons networks broadcast live sports is that they can use the platform to push their other shows that no one cares about.
Who can forget all the years Fox used to stuff their little-watched superstars on the ball courts and then show them on camera during the game and have Joe Buck all act excited that a D-list celebrity actually attended an MLB playoff.
Over the years, promotions for other shows have become more complex and high-tech. The networks have done their best to blur the line between what is an advertisement and what is an actual broadcast.
TBS tried this trick Tuesday night during a Guardians-Yankees match with a really ridiculous promotion for some HBO Max shows. (Both TBS and HBO are part of the new Warner Brothers Discovery Network collection.)
What made this promotion so special was that Bob Costas, who was dealing with play by play, and Lauren Shahadi, who was taking on side duties, were forced to participate in the inconvenience.
Kostas started this nonsense by saying, “We weren’t sure that this match would take place tonight.” This was a particularly baffling statement for any New York viewer, because we had perfect weather here on Tuesday. But then Kostas threw it to the Shehadeh, and the confusion went to another level.
Shehadeh reported that some dragon, which looks like a bird, would shoot fans and then insert a plug for the show.
I actually felt bad for Kostas and Shehadeh after watching that.
But the embarrassment did not end with the promo. Kostas put cherries on top of the sundae by explaining to people that the dragon wasn’t real. Good grief, what a train wreck!

And here’s the call from the Astros local radio broadcast.
3. We also treated ourselves to another memorable call on Tuesday. Here’s the sound of New York Yankees John Sterling doing his thing on Harrison Bader’s first vocalist as a Bronx thrower, complete with vocals.
