1. The Leaders and Bears somehow managed to score fewer points (19) on Thursday night than the Colts and Broncos did a week ago (21).
We told you last week that one thing that made Indianapolis’ 12-9 win over Denver somewhat impressive was the man-of-the-play performance by Al Michaels, who didn’t shy away from letting viewers know the game was a hog.
Unfortunately for Michaels, his partner Kirk Herbstreet, Amazon Prime Video, NFL fans, the league and anyone else connected to football, Washington and Chicago gave us another hog last night.
After consecutive weeks of inept football, viewers became anxious about Michaels.
One side note before I get to this: While combing through Twitter to see what people are saying about the legendary anchor, I was struck by the amount of tweets I saw that said something like, “Why should anyone feel bad about Michaels? He left.” Sunday Night Football For money.” Or, “Al took the money and ran.”
Let’s be clear about one thing. Michaels didn’t want to leave Sunday Night Football. It seems clear that NBC pushed Michaels out because of his age, because he was waiting for Mike Terrico in the wings and because it didn’t make sense to pay big salaries to both Michaels and Trico.
But Michaels does not want to retire. So, once Joe Buck and Troy Aikman get to ESPN Monday Night Football Once Fox decided to elevate Kevin Burkhardt to the position of number one broadcaster after Buck left, Michaels decided to take a Prime Video party. So while Michaels gets a lot of money from Amazon and no one should throw him a pity party, there’s nothing wrong with saying he got a raw deal. Each of us loves to make what Al makes, but each of us would also feel bad for giving up our jobs because of age.
We’d also be surprised if we went from calling what’s usually the second-best game of the week on Sunday night (after Sunday’s 4:25pm game) to our seventh or eighth-best game of the week.
Most people seem to understand, which is why the best part of last night’s game was seeing Michaels’ interest on social media and the reaction to Al’s performance.
2. Dick Ebersol, the former CEO of NBC Sports, gave us one of the worst pullbacks you could see on Thursday. Ebersol gave an interview where Tony Romo was burned.
“I’ve known Tony Romo, ever since he first hit the pros,” Ebersol told CNN. “He’s an incredibly attractive guy. He must have been a great, great announcer. Something has happened since he climbed into that chair. And he doesn’t seem to like her. Like he’s in his way. He doesn’t seem to be the narrator he should be. The thing that makes [Al] great michaels, [Joe] Buck is awesome, and all of these guys are really storytellers. And I think Tony has gotten further and further away from that.”
Of course, these comments got a big boost across the World Wide Web, so Ebersol issued a statement to me New York Post.
“Tony Romo is like a son to me. I’m truly his biggest fan on and off the court. As a fan and producer, I’ve always been known to give unsolicited feedback. But this time, after a long day of interviews, I’ve gone too far and honestly said things I don’t believe and she Simply incorrect. There is no announcer more enthusiastic about the NFL than Tony Romo, and I personally can’t wait to hear his call and every Sunday. It’s as good as it gets.”
So Ebersol destroyed Romo because he did so many interviews in one day?
3. If you enjoy a good grumpy post-match press conference like I do, captains coach Ron Rivera gave us a good one last night.
4. Travis Kelsey was composed in a four-point game against the Raiders on Monday night, and it was a lot of fun.
5. If hockey wants to improve its ratings, I’d suggest having more ex-players/podcast hosts mock players from the stands over the arena mic during the game, as Biz Nasty and Ryan Whitney did with Sidney Crosby on Thursday night.
6. this week Sports Illustrated Media Podcast Features a conversation with radio legend Dan Le Petard.
Le Batard talks about his time at ESPN, why he had to leave the company, his ups and downs over the years, and the generous move ESPN made when he left. The podcast concludes with the weekly segment “Traina Ideas” with Sal Licata, of WFAN and SNY in New York. This week, we’re discussing an MLB postseason, Bob Costas called a TBS watershed series, Davante Adams pushing photographer and Troy Aikman’s controversial comments. We also offer a “best bet” in the weekly NFL. I’m 5–0 on the season, while Sal is 3–2, so it’s time to fade away.
