Three months before Harmony Montgomery’s father was accused of killing the 5-year-old, her stepmother pointed a finger at her estranged husband — claiming she was encouraged to lie to the police.
In court documents submitted this week in contact With a separate firearms case against Adam Montgomery, prosecutors disclosed on June 3 an interview they had with his estranged wife, Kayla Montgomery. During that interview, Kayla claimed that Montgomery killed Harmony in December 2019 — about two years before she was reported missing in New Hampshire.
Kayla said that too [Adam Montgomery] She encouraged her on multiple occasions to lie to the police about Harmony’s whereabouts, basically gave her a “cover story” and told her that as long as she sticks to the cover story, everything will be fine,” the movement added.
The revelation comes as the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office announced on Monday that Montgomery has been arrested and charged in connection with the Harmony murder. Prosecutors allege that Harmony died after being repeatedly “beaten” on the head with a closed fist on or around December 7, 2019. Subsequently, Montgomery allegedly “removed, concealed, or destroyed” his daughter’s body.
Montgomery, 32, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to all four counts, including second-degree murder and falsification of physical evidence, and will remain in prison. He also faces several other charges, including allegations of misuse of Harmony and theft of weapons just weeks before her murder.
Next month, Montgomery is scheduled to appear at trial on the firearms charges, with Kayla listed as a state witness. Prosecutors allege that Montgomery stole two firearms between September 29, 2019 and October 3, 2019, but they have indicated that these weapons had nothing to do with Harmony’s murder.
Court documents state that Kayla – who is also facing charges for allegedly using Harmony’s food stamp benefits and receiving stolen property in connection with the firearms case – told at least four witnesses of her estranged husband’s crime.
One such conversation occurred while Kayla was imprisoned at the Hillsborough County Correctional Facility. The witness, according to court documents, told police that “Kayla spoke of” that they “steal firearms and sell them for drug money.”
“Kyla said they needed the money to buy drugs and take care of the children,” the court document added. “Kayla said she wasn’t there when the guns were taken but it was Adam and her boyfriend who took them and brought him home when she was home with the kids.”
Prosecutors noted that Kayla lied to authorities about her knowledge of the firearm theft on two separate occasions. But in June, after she was arrested for perjury for her testimony before a grand jury, she provided new information about Montgomery’s alleged role in the firearm incident and Harmony’s death.
Authorities say Harmony was last seen between November 28 and December 10, 2019, after her father and Kayla were evicted from their Manchester home. Police first learned of Harmony’s disappearance when she informed her biological mother, Crystal Suri, that her daughter was “missing and that she had not seen [her] in more than six months.
