Republican-led states sue to expel legal immigrants at border

A coalition of republican-led states he asks A district court to consider whether the Biden administration should be prosecuted in contempt of court for violating an order requiring it to expel illegal immigrants at the US-Mexico border. The supposed crime? Allow Haitian immigrants to enter the country legally.

The efforts show that states are not interested in solving the problem of illegal immigration, but rather, in keeping immigrants out of the country entirely. In fact, by trying to stem the legal flow of immigrants, they are explicitly asking the Biden administration to deliberately sabotage the border in a way that would increase illegal immigration.

These Republican-led states want illegal immigration, even if it means more chaos.

Haitians have entered the country legally through land ports of entry between the United States and Mexico at least since the 2010 earthquake. The Obama administration decided not to deport Haitians to a state of devastation, so when they sought asylum at ports of entry, they were simply granted a discretionary form of temporary legal status known as Parole. They can enter and apply for work legally.

The result was that about 99.9 percent of all Haitians come to the US-Mexico border I entered the country legally. But the Trump administration’s decision to stop handling asylum seekers at ports of entry, and then close the ports almost entirely to “non-essential” travelers during the pandemic, has upended the flow to 99.9 percent is illegal.

It created a huge illegal immigration problem out of nothing, and at first, President Biden kept the restrictions entirely.

The height of this migration crisis occurred in September 2021, when a large group of Haitians crossed illegally – next to a legal port of entry (which was closed to them). The government trapped them in the miserable camp, refusing to let them leave. Then border agents on horses began chasing the Haitians when they returned from Mexico with food for their families.

Combined with Trump’s failed experiment in family separation, the Haitian camp was perhaps the most chaotic and inhumane moment on record at the border in decades. In response, the administration tried to expel as many Haitians as possible—and while thousands were expelled, the problem persisted.

This failure led the Biden administration to quietly change course this summer, and to begin accepting Haitians into the United States legally again.

Once again, streaming has gone from over 99 percent illegal to over 99 percent legal. The problem has been resolved. The borders are secured.

However, that’s exactly what irritates these Republican border states: They know the Biden administration has solved a large part of the border crisis, but they don’t want these immigrants to be in the country at all — legal or otherwise — even if it means more. of chaos on the border.

Republican-led states pretend to be surprised by all of this — claiming that the administration never informed them of the change — but that’s just plain wrong. in his first report To court, the Biden administration described how it was rebuilding the process for legally accepting immigrants at ports of entry, and in… Latest Report In court, she said she had “gradually begun to increase” the number of legal admissions.

What is happening here is not an ordinary legal hassle. Instead, states are trying to weaken orderly management of the border just days after the election. They understand that no one of any political persuasion wants to see the chaos that unfolded on the border in September last year, but that is exactly what they would unleash if the court sided with them.

It should be noted that some other immigrants are also legally accepted (although there aren’t many of them) along with Haitians (although states only mention Haitians specifically for some reason). There are some exceptions for Central American families, and almost all Ukrainians They are still accepted legally at ports of entry.

But the countries do not appear to be too concerned about the entry of Ukrainians. They did not interfere in the process. Instead, they hope Biden will be blamed for what they believe is bad political optics if he again prevents black Haitian immigrants from entering legally, then still crossing illegally.

They could be right. But the truth is clear: these republican states want failed and insecure borders.
