Thieves used a bulldozer to pull an automated teller machine from a wall in the village of Yarvilla, in the southern municipality of Karkula.

The incident is similar to the theft of an ATM machine that took place in a nearby village last month.

The burglary occurred on Friday around 3 a.m., and several calls were made to emergency services regarding the incident.

Eyewitnesses told the police that they heard loud noises and saw more than one suspect at the scene.

“The investigation shows that the perpetrators were two men in dark clothes. It is not yet possible to infer anything else from the night-time CCTV footage,” he said. Marco Fornanena responsible investigator at the Häme Police Department.

According to security footage and witness testimonies, the loader headed towards the railway station from the scene of the accident.

The bulldozer used in the theft has already been returned to its owner. The authorities have not yet determined the location of the stolen ATM.

“It’s possible that the ATM was lifted on a trailer, for example, and moved beyond,” Vornanen told Yle.

‘Undeniable similarities’

In October, a similar robbery was committed in Mäntsälä, which is about 33 kilometers from where the ATM robbery took place on Friday.

Thieves in Mäntsälä also pulled an ATM off a wall using a bucket-loader that was temporarily controlled.

There were also two perpetrators of the theft in Mäntsälä and the incident was recorded on surveillance video. The time of the robbery was also three in the morning that day. The thieves also returned the stolen loader used in the previous robbery close to its original location. Police found the stolen Mäntsälä ATM empty of cash the following week.

“There are undeniable similarities,” Vornanen emphasized.

Police asked potential witnesses to the accident for their observations. They also requested information about motor vehicle traffic on Coconti Street after 3 a.m. on Friday.
