The Calling Season 1 Ending, Explained: Who Killed Vincent Conte? !

“The Calling” was created by David E. Kelley, known for developing programs such as LA Law, Boston Legal, and Goliath, a Peacock crime drama series. The story revolves around Avraham “Avi” Avraham (Jeff Wellbush), an NYPD detective with exceptional deductive skills and superb interrogation techniques. Avi is also a devout Jew, whose faith governs how he approaches his life. At the start of Season 1, the more environmentally friendly detective, Janine Harris (Juliana Canfield), convinces their captain, Kathleen Davis (Karen Robinson), to let her be Avi’s partner, even though he’d rather work alone.

“The Calling” is a television adaptation of the novel “Avraham Avraham” or “The Calling” by Israeli author Dror Mashani. The first four episodes of season one are based on the opening entry in the novel series titled “The Missing File”. For the remaining four episodes, Kelly and his team edited the second book, “Possible Violence.” Therefore, two separate sets of puzzles are investigated and solved during the season – the first set in Episode 4 and the second set in Episode 8. Here’s everything you need to know about the end of Season 1 of The Calling. spoilers ahead.

Summary of the first season of Calling

The Calling begins by proving the protagonist’s ability to empathize with people – victims and perpetrators alike. Avi interrogates a man in a sausage mascot and leads him toward confessing that he killed a man in a rage. It is also when he meets Janine for the first time. She observes the interrogation and speaks to Captain Davis immediately afterward, putting herself in Avi. Janine is ambitious. She has recently become a detective but is already planning the next step in her career and intends to take a political position in the future.

While Avi interrogates the man dressed as a hot dog, Nora arrives at the circuit to register a missing person. Avi, who is understandably distracted, tries to reassure Nora that her son is behaving his age and will be back soon. Unfortunately, by the time people realize the boy is already gone, it seems to be too late. The missing boy, Vincent, lives in an apartment complex in Brooklyn with his parents, Nora and Leonard, and his sister, Olivia. The family is especially close to their neighbors Zach and Dania Miller. Zach is an aspiring author who was teaching writing to Vincent before his disappearance. As Avi tries to solve the case, he also begins to suspect John Wentworth, a disgraced and homeless former college professor who was close to Vincent.

As mentioned earlier, the last four episodes revolve around an entirely different mystery. A daycare center run by Anna Harvey receives bomb threats. However, Anna ignores them at first, seemingly thinking they are from the property owner or competitors. But then, you get a terrible reality check when someone sends a device. While it does not contain explosives, it pays the NYPD to look into it. While investigating the case, they discover that one of the foster carers, Elizabeth Serra, is missing. She supposedly went to Mexico City, Mexico, to visit her parents, but she’s not there.

Technically, two episodes serve as the epilogue, providing conclusions to two sets of puzzles in the first season of “The Calling..” The case involving Vincent’s disappearance reveals dark and disturbing secrets about the family, while the bomb threat case turns out to be the result of disbelief and bitterness.

Season 1 of The Calling ends: What happened to Vincent Conte?

The central mystery of the first four episodes revolves around the mysterious disappearance of Vincent Conti. When Avi and the team began their investigation, they initially thought he had run away, especially after they realized how toxic the environment in his home was. Leonard constantly underestimated his son, sending sinister notes about what he considered to be a mediocre performer. But as the series progressed, it became increasingly clear to investigators that sinister gameplay was involved.

Vincent’s best friend reveals to the detectives that a girl kissed Vincent. But Avi does talk to a high school girl Vincent. He discovers that it was not she who kissed Vincent. In the end, Dania confessed to the police that she kissed Vincent, who was a minor at the time. Moreover, her husband learned about this, as Vincent himself told him.

Avi realizes that whatever happened to Vincent, he never left the apartment complex. Realizing that the Millers are innocent – at least in the event of Vincent’s ultimate fate – Avi uses them to set a trap for the Vincent family. Dania calls Nora and speculates that Zach is in touch with Vincent, an idea that Nora rejects. Under normal circumstances, a parent would try to hold on to any hope and believe any possible theory about their missing children. Avi assumes that Nora refuses to believe that Zack and Vincent are talking to each other because she knows what happened to her son.

So, Avi convinces Nora to come to the area and makes her believe that they have found Vincent’s body. Then the truth comes – at least in part. According to Nora, Leonard entered while Vincent was sexually satisfying in front of Olivia and angrily pushed his son, who was accidentally killed. At first the police thought so. But then, Danya tells Avi that anyone who knows Vincent will say he is incapable of doing the things he was accused of doing, which makes Avi realize that it was Leonard who sexually assaulted his daughter, and that Vincent fell for her by accident. What happened to him was very deliberate on the part of Leonard. Then Leonard put Vincent’s body in a large bag and dumped it in the port. After the police confront Leonard and arrest him, Avi and the team realize that Nora likely knew about the abuse. As for Olivia, she didn’t say anything because she was so traumatized by the accident.

Who sends bomb threats? Who attacked Anna?

The idea that someone might send bomb threats to a daycare is ridiculous in itself, but “The Calling” positions it as a crime that stems from bitterness and anger. Anna, the owner of the custody, was in an affair with one of her sponsors, Brad Holt. However, she knew how vengeful Brad’s wife could be, so she tried to break things up between her and Brad. The latter responded to this violently and obsessively. It was he who sent the bomb threats and left the package with explosives inside the nursery. Anna was so afraid of him that she agreed to sleep with him to prevent him from harming the children. It was also Brad who attacked her in the streets. He likely thought he could get away with it while he was not the prime suspect in the bomb threats.

What happened to Elizabeth Serra?

Elizabeth, like Vincent, is a victim of the actions of people close to her. In their investigation, Avi and the team learn that Elizabeth had an affair with Peter Haney, one of the richest men in New York. They initially assumed that Elizabeth was planning to leave her husband and Hani behind and go to Mexico City with her children. Hanney reported the financial ruin of the Serra family by tricking Paul into making bad investments in cryptocurrency. He intended to make Elizabeth leave Paul. In the end, Paul killed Elizabeth because she was ready to leave him for Haney. Then he buried her body at his work site. Faced with the prospect of imprisonment and permanent separation from his children, Paul tries to escape from the area. When that proves impossible, he commits suicide by the cops.

Is John Wentworth dead? Is he a victim or a killer?

The final – and as yet unsolved – mystery concerns the death of John Wentworth. Avi and Janine go to investigate his death in the season finale sequence. Wentworth could be seen lying in his pool of blood. Just then, a police officer announced over the radio that the murder suspect with the physical description of Wentworth is a fugitive. Janine then finds a gun on Wentworth and wonders if he was a victim or a killer, prompting Avi to reply that Wentworth was his friend.

Given that the last time they saw each other, Wentworth wanted to give what he claimed was valuable information for money, it was very likely that he was killed because people found out about his intentions. Avi notices that someone wrote the word “Father” in Hebrew in blood on Wentworth’s head. This makes the killing seem ritualistic, as if the real perpetrators wanted to send a message.
