HSY suspected of old tubes

The Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY) suspected this could be a chain reaction of old pipes.

“There is no malice or vandalism, it is probably due to a chain reaction. Several malfunctions in the pipes in the inner city area, due to the fact that we have a reasonably old pipeline network,” he said. Tommy RantalaDepartment Manager at HSY.

According to Rantala, outages in one of the main lines may have caused pressure shocks throughout the connected network.

HSY said more problems could emerge throughout the Sunday afternoon and evening.

There are four confirmed leaks and one suspected bullet. HSY is investigating the effects of the damage on the city’s water supply. If there are major disturbances, HSY is ready to distribute the water via mobile supply units.

“We can handle temporary distribution with either a mobile water container for distribution or otherwise, if pressurized water is not available. Mobile distribution points will be announced when necessary later on Sunday,” Rantala told Yle.

The root cause of the problem will not be known for a few days, when HSY will repair and scan the damaged parts of the network.
