PS6 and next-gen Xbox release windows are set! …very tentatively!

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S is part of the ninth generation of consoles along with the Nintendo Switch. It’s only been two years since the launch of both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X| S, but it looks like the next generation of consoles is already planned out. The PlayStation 6 and future Xbox console have a new release window announced by both companies.

It’s only a tentative release date, and there’s no official statement from either company that these consoles are being developed. However, it does give us an idea of the time frame that companies plan to release new consoles.

While filing documents for the Xbox-Activision merger, Microsoft addressed Sony in its statement, though no statement from Sony was included. Microsoft indicated in its most recent response document (under Section 3.80) that it expects gamers to rethink their console ownership when the next generation of consoles comes out. The oath continues, noting that rethinking ownership of this console is only likely every eight years.

Microsoft also goes on to point out that if Sony is concerned about the merger moving forward, it will have six years to come up with a timely response to the next generation of consoles. With the estimated dates, a new console could be released by the two companies around 2028, given that both consoles were originally released in 2020.

This is not a confirmed date, and supply chain shortages due to the Covid pandemic have certainly affected Microsoft and Sony’s plans moving forward. These eight-year estimates are likely to be delayed, since gamers need to spend more time with the current ninth generation of consoles. This tentative date also doesn’t seem to apply to companies like Nintendo.

However, if you’re considering the next PlayStation 6 or Xbox in the distant future, you might want to wait for 2026-2028. Depending on the success of the merger, this may be when you see a new console. Don’t hold your breath, but you can’t deny that the next generation of consoles has already been thought of.
