Rare shared its first Sea of Thieves news for 2023, revealing a new pet rock expression, matchmaking tweaks, and an infamous wall exploit fix. Many fans found the exploit cheap and annoying, and have been begging Rare to fix it for a while. Turkey Wall is a fan term to describe an exploit where players use crates or chests to protect themselves from artillery shells.
The news video goes into more about the game’s upcoming new adventure called The Secret Wilds, which will be a continuation of the previous adventure, The Rogue’s Legacy. The Silent Wilds continues to tell the story of Tasha’s curse and will be available for free from January 19th to February 2nd. Rare also offers a full-color Sea of Thieves calendar in store.

A new Minotaur-inspired ship set called Mythical Misadventures will be available at the Pirate Emporium later this month. The store will also provide players with a Labyrinth Looter weapon set, a minotaur-based outfit called the Labyrinth Looter Costume, and a Charge Up Emote. Other new emotes coming to the game include an Oar-inspired emote, in which players take an Oar and do some poses, and the pet rock emote, in which players pull out a rock to talk to. New emotes will be available Come here, players connect with other players for free.
Sea of Thieves chief designer George Orton shared that he and other developers are working to improve the PVP gameplay for the title. Rarely does it modify matchmaking for online play, which includes adding faction battles themselves when matchmaking takes too long, which means there should always be a battle available for players. Faction battles themselves will improve stamp migration, allowing more crews to find each other as part of the migration process. Online players will also get increased compensation when their ship is sunk. Rare also boosts the number of arenas available in PVP from six to 50.
