Nintendo has released a lot of Pokémon games, including fun spin-offs and main games that focus on trainers and Gen 1 to Gen 9 Pokémon. However, players who have played the main Pokémon titles will know the intense feeling of choosing just one out of three possible starting Pokémon. Here’s a quick look at the starting Pokemon from every major Pokemon game in history.

These three are the iconic Pokemon that won each player over at the start of the franchise. At the beginning of each game, players can choose only one of the three – Bulbasaur of leaf type, Charmander of fire type, and Squirtle of water type. Those who want to have a different start need to start a new game.

Ash’s Pikachu is the only starter Pokémon that is unique in some ways. First, you can’t choose a Pikachu from a group of three. Second, you can’t put Pikachu inside a Pokéball. On top of that, you’ll need to catch other Pokemon early in the game to defeat the first gym because this mouse is, well, electric. Interestingly, the player was supposed to get Eevee but gets Pikachu instead.

The second batch of starter Pokémon is yours to choose from at the start of your adventures in the Johto region. Along with them, more new Pokémon came to find, catch and train. There were 100 new monsters to catch in addition to Gen one Pokémon.

These Gen 4 starters may not appeal to some players, but they do mark the introduction of 107 new Pokémon and a new area to explore, Sinnoh. They are also the first Pokémon to be featured as starters in the Nintendo DS base Pokémon game.

These three are the starters for the fifth generation Pokémon titles. Along with them come features such as a new region called Unova, seasons, and National Pokédex, which become available after the main story ends.

You can obtain these starter Pokemon when you begin your adventure in the Galar region Pokemon Sword and Shield. These titles are also the first to feature Gigantamax forms in battles. As the name suggests, Gigantamax Pokémon are giant and look different than normal evolutions.
