The deep caverns in Colossal Cave are incredibly dark and the only thing that can help you in this spooky adventure is your trusty flashlight. However, if this is your first time playing, getting the lamp may not be as straightforward as it should be. So, to make sure you don’t get stuck at the beginning of your journey, here’s how to get the lamp in the Colossal Cave, and how you can use it too after that.
How to get the lamp in the huge cave
When you start a new game in Colossal Cave, you will find yourself in front of the well house. To get the lamp, you will need to enter the building. You can do this by approaching the door and cycle through your actions (right-click) until you get the manual action of opening the door. Left click when you are next to the door with a flick of the hand and it will open.

Head inside, and on the left, the first thing you will find on the table is the lamp. Do the same thing you did with the door to open it and you’ll pick up the lamp. You should also pick up water, food and the key from this room.
How to use the flashlight in the huge cave
To use the lamp (or lantern) in Colossal Cave, you will only need to open your inventory. You can do this either by pressing “I” on your keyboard or by pressing the middle button on your mouse.

In the inventory you will have to left-click on the flashlight and then left-click on the “turn on the lantern” button. Doing so will activate the flashlight to run forever and you won’t have to turn it on manually at any time again.
