Liverpool are still struggling through something of an injury crisis, but it appears to be nearing an end, with Jurgen Klopp confirming some of his star players are closing in on a return.

The Reds are still missing a string of players, but Diogo Jota is close to being available again, as are Virgil van Dijk and Roberto Firmino after lengthy injury lay-offs.

Luis Diaz is also making good progress in his recovery, although he will not be back until next month, but Liverpool fans can expect to see the other three again in February.

‘Diogo had a full session with the team this week but then the next day he had a rehab session,’ said Klopp on Friday ahead of a trip to Wolves on Saturday afternoon.

‘Not because of the session the day before, it was just part of the plan. I think he will be pretty much back in normal training next week.

‘Bobby (Firmino) is getting closer and Luis (Diaz) is running now. That will take a few weeks still. Virgil is getting closer, but not ready for the Wolves game, obviously. Parts of training next week for him I think.’

Ibrahima Konate is also still out injured, meaning it will be Joel Matip and Joe Gomez at centre-back on Saturday, a partnership which Klopp admits is not ideal but should be fine.

‘It’s not cool to have changes to the partnership, you don’t want to have that,’ said the German. ‘You want to make these changes when you rotate or bring people together in a perfect moment.

‘Joey and Joel obviously played together before, so it’s not a massive problem, but it’s not perfect.’

After the trip to Wolves this weekend, the Reds host Everton on 13 February and go to Newcastle five days later.

Then it is the return of the Champions League on February 21 against Real Madrid, with Van Dijk, Jota and Firmino all hopeful of being back by then.
