My wish list for Nintendo Switch ports – Reader’s Feature

Grand Theft Auto V

A reader offers suggestions for how Nintendo can fill the gap between now and the Switch 2, with ports like Metal Gear Solid and Elden Ring.

There’s a lot of speculation that the Switch is coming to the end of its life cycle and that Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom will be the last big release in terms of new Nintendo games.

The theory is that Nintendo will instead concentrate on releasing ports and remakes. Here’s my wishlist if this is the case.

Like most people, I had hoped that this might be included with the Super Mario 3D All-Stars package that was released a few years ago. 3D All-Stars was the first time I experienced the first Galaxy game and I massively enjoyed it.

I’ve since played a little of the second game after trading in my PlayStation VR for a Wii U. Despite that I’d still buy it on Switch. My Wii U isn’t often plugged in and I don’t much care for the Wiimote and nunchuck. To be able to play it on the Switch would make the experience more enjoyable.

The Legend Of Zelda All-Stars

Which Zelda game I hear you ask? And to that I reply, pretty much any of them.

I’m a big fan of Breath Of The Wild, having never played a Zelda game before, and would like to experience more of the 3D games. I’ve played a little of Skyward Sword but found the control scheme to be frustrating.

I’ve also tracked down old copies of Twilight Princess and The Wind Waker but the issue of sub-optimal control schemes and having to set the Wii U up comes into play.

What I want is to be able to use my Switch and play these games in bed. For me a Mario 3D type situation with a collection of games using a modern control set-up with a bit of spit and polish would be ideal. Either that or a full remake of Ocarina Of Time and Majora’s Mask with all the improvements that would entail.

Batman: Arkham Collection

This was rumored to be coming to the Switch and I was disappointed when it never came to fruition. I’ve played the Arkham games a number of times but would happily do so again if I could do so on the go or while in bed on a night before sleep.

I’m not sure how the final game would turn out, even though Arkham Knight is nearly eight years old it still looks impressive and possibly beyond the capabilities of the Switch. Since I never got round to playing it, it would be great if it included Arkham Origins, even though it’s probably not possible due to licensing issues. [It’s not licensing issues, it’s that developer Rocksteady, who made the other games, seems to resent its existence – GC]

Metal Gear Solid

I guess the issue with this is again with licensing. Although Metal Gear is also on Xbox these days, I’m not sure who owns the rights to earlier games since they were PlayStation exclusives. [That’s not how exclusives work, all the games, and the brand itself, are owned by Konami – GC] I loved the original game back in the PS1 days but haven’t played any others in the series. Partly because I’m pretty bad at stealth and also because the games aren’t freely available. I definitely would be interested if they did a HD remaster of the first few games.

Grand Theft Auto 5

This is more a case of why hasn’t this happened? GTA 5 is surely perfectly within the realms of being suitable to port, since it was originally a PlayStation 3 game. And I’m sure Rockstar and Nintendo would make a whole bunch of money. Minimal effort for maximum reward. I’m not sure I’d buy the game if it was full price but could be tempted to play if it was around £20-30.

Elden Ring

Despite not beating the game and bowing out after having my ass handed to me by Maliketh, the Black Blade, Elden Ring is one of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had. It would be great starting the game again with more knowledge of how to proceed and the portability of the Switch would mean I might have a better chance at dedicating more time to finishing it.

However, I realize this is wishful thinking as even though I imagine it is less technically advanced than some other current generation games it is still outside the capabilities of what the Switch can achieve.
